Organo Gold in One Minute

Organo Gold, now branded simply as Organo, is a multi-level marketing company founded in 2008 by Bernardo "Bernie" Chua, with Shane Morand among its co-founders. It sells coffee, hot chocolate and tea blended with Ganoderma lucidum, a mushroom also known as reishi, along with personal care products. Distributors earn from their own sales and from a binary team structure.

Organo Gold grew quickly in the 2010s and drew a lot of attention, much of it critical. Consumer complaints, a jury verdict over the collapse of a rival company and, in 2024, a public split with co-founder Shane Morand are all part of its record. This review looks at what joining costs, how the pay plan works and what that history means for you.

What Organo Gold Sells

Organo's best-known products are instant coffees and drinks blended with Ganoderma extract, marketed as healthier alternatives to regular coffee. It also sells green tea, hot chocolate, supplements and toiletries such as soap and toothpaste. This review looks at Organo as a business opportunity, not at health claims about Ganoderma. Speak to a doctor before using any product for health reasons.

Ganoderma products are widely available outside MLMs, often at lower prices, so it is worth comparing before you buy.

What It Costs to Join Organo Gold

New distributors have joined with a business kit reported at $49.95, which includes samples, a website and a year of back-office access, with an annual renewal after that. Distributors can also buy optional business builder packs:

Organo Gold Joining Costs (Reported)
ItemReported Price
Business kit$49.95
Bronze packAbout $150
Silver packAbout $450
Gold packAbout $1,245

The packs matter because recruitment bonuses have been tied to them. When a new distributor buys a bigger pack, the person who recruited them earns a bigger bonus, which gives your upline a reason to encourage the expensive option.

How the Organo Gold Pay Plan Works

  1. Retail profit on coffee and products sold to customers.
  2. Fast-start bonuses of about $20 to $150 when a recruit's new members buy builder packs.
  3. Binary commissions of up to 20% of the weaker side of your team's sales volume, with weekly caps by rank.
  4. Unilevel commissions across up to nine levels, depending on rank.
  5. Matching, generational and global pool bonuses for higher ranks.

The plan has 12 ranks, from Representative to Crown Ambassador. Higher ranks require large team volumes and a set number of recruits who have reached the Consultant rank, from four at Sapphire to ten at Diamond and above. Weekly binary caps range from about $500 to $75,000, but those are limits, not typical earnings.

  • Consumer complaints (2014): public records obtained in 2014 showed the FTC had received at least 55 complaints about Organo Gold, alleging inflated income claims and exaggerated product claims. The company had also wrongly claimed on its website to be a pending member of the Direct Selling Association. The company denied being a pyramid scheme.
  • The AmeriSciences verdict (2018 to 2019): the bankruptcy trustee of AmeriSciences, a supplement MLM, sued Organo Gold and top distributor Holton Buggs, alleging they helped cause AmeriSciences' collapse. In May 2018 a jury found them liable, and the court entered a judgment of about $3.46 million plus about $610,000 in interest. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld it in July 2019.
  • Co-founder split (2023 to 2024): co-founder Shane Morand announced he had left Organo and said he had begun legal proceedings related to his time there. The details have not been made public.

We found no FTC lawsuit or warning letter against Organo Gold itself. But FTC complaints, a jury verdict upheld on appeal and a co-founder dispute are a lot of history for one company.

Is Organo Gold a Pyramid Scheme?

No regulator has found that it is. The question to ask is whether most volume comes from real coffee customers or from distributors buying packs and product to qualify. Pack-based recruitment bonuses and a binary plan that rewards team volume lean toward recruitment. The FTC's guidance on multi-level marketing and pyramid schemes explains why that matters.

Is Organo Gold a Scam?

No. Organo sells real products that customers drink every day, and it has operated since 2008. But its opportunity rewards recruiting and pack sales, Ganoderma coffee is easy to buy elsewhere, and the company's record includes a significant jury verdict and years of complaints about income claims. We would not join it to make money.

Who Organo Gold Might Suit

Organo may suit coffee drinkers who prefer its products and want a distributor discount. For income, the costs of packs and monthly volume, and the competition from cheaper alternatives, make it a tough business for beginners.
