Scentsy sells wickless candle warmers, scented wax bars, diffusers, oils, plush toys and other home fragrance products through independent consultants. It was founded in Utah in 2003 by Kara Egan and Colette Gunnell, and bought in 2004 by Orville and Heidi Thompson, who grew it into one of the best-known direct selling brands. It is based in Meridian, Idaho, where it makes many of its products, and its CEO is Dan Orchard.

Scentsy is a legitimate company with products many customers buy for their own sake, which sets it apart from many MLMs. It also publishes a clear income disclosure. That disclosure is the main reason to read this review: it shows that the typical consultant earns a few hundred dollars a year or less, before costs.

What It Costs to Become a Scentsy Consultant

Scentsy's entry cost is lower than many MLMs. Consultants have joined with a starter kit reported at about $99, which includes products and samples. A personal Scentsy website has been free for the first 90 days and about $15 a month after that.

The ongoing cost is selling activity. To stay "Active" under the plan effective April 2025, a consultant needs at least 250 PRV (personal retail volume, roughly $250 in retail sales) each month. Many consultants meet part of that through their own purchases, parties and catalog costs.

How Scentsy Consultants Get Paid

Scentsy's plan is built mainly around retail sales, which is a better structure than plans that reward recruiting directly:

1. Commissions of 20% on personal retail sales, rising to 25% from the Certified Consultant rank.
2. Commissions of 10% to 15% on Scentsy Club subscription orders from your referred customers.
3. A 5% bonus in months your personal retail volume exceeds 2,500.
4. Wholesale bonuses of up to 9% on personal and frontline team volume, depending on rank.
5. Leadership bonuses of 2% to 5% for director ranks.

A 20% to 25% commission means that to earn $500, a consultant needs about $2,000 to $2,500 in retail sales. That is a lot of wax bars at around $6 each.

What Do Scentsy Consultants Actually Earn?

Scentsy publishes its US income figures. For 2024, it reported two groups of consultants:

These are yearly figures, not monthly, and they are gross earnings before costs such as the starter kit, website fees, samples, shipping, party supplies and your own product purchases. Half of full-year consultants earned less than $466.56 for the whole of 2024. The average is higher because a small number of top consultants earn much more.

That pattern matches the FTC's 2024 staff report on MLM income disclosures, which found that most participants earn little and that disclosures rarely account for expenses.

Layoffs and Changes Since 2025

Scentsy said it reached $1 billion in revenue in 2021. Since then, it has restructured. In 2025, it laid off 94 people in Texas and 116 people in Idaho, about 11% of its workforce at the time, and made significant changes to its compensation plan and product range. In March 2026, it announced another round of cuts of about 11% of positions. CEO Dan Orchard said the decisions were "necessary" and that the company is "well-positioned for the future."

Layoffs don't mean a company is failing, but they do suggest that sales are under pressure, which makes building a new consultant business harder.

Is Scentsy a Pyramid Scheme?

No regulator has said so, and we found no FTC action against Scentsy. Its pay plan is weighted toward retail sales, and many customers buy its products without any interest in the business. Those are the features that separate legitimate direct selling from pyramid schemes. The weak point is income, not legality.

Is Scentsy a Scam?

No. Scentsy is a long-running company with real products, a retail-focused pay plan and an honest income disclosure. But its own numbers show that selling Scentsy is, for most people, a small side income at best, and often less than the cost of staying active.
