The Basics

A gold IRA follows the same distribution rules as any traditional or Roth IRA. The difference is that your account holds metal, so you either sell the metal for cash or take the metal itself (an in-kind distribution).

Required Minimum Distributions

The IRS says you generally must start taking withdrawals from traditional, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs at age 73. With a gold IRA, that means either selling enough metal each year or distributing metal worth the required amount. Planning matters because metal comes in whole coins and bars.

  1. Ask your custodian for your yearly RMD amount.
  2. Decide whether to sell metal or take it in kind.
  3. Keep some smaller coins to match amounts more easily.
  4. Consider holding RMD money in a regular IRA.
  5. Complete the distribution before year-end.

Early Withdrawals

Withdrawals from a traditional IRA before age 59½ may face a 10% additional tax on top of ordinary income tax, with some exceptions listed in IRS Topic 557.

Roth Gold IRAs

Qualified Roth withdrawals are tax-free, and the original owner doesn't take RMDs. See Roth gold IRA.

Choosing a Company With Clear Exit Terms

Ask about buyback bids and distribution fees before you buy. Our top pick, Augusta Precious Metals, reviews buyback bids with customers; our budget pick Noble Gold publishes its distribution fees. See buybacks and markups.
