Three Prices to Know

The Prices Behind Every Gold Purchase
PriceMeaning
Spot priceThe market price for raw metal
Ask (your purchase price)Spot plus the dealer's premium
Bid (buyback price)What the dealer would pay you today

The gap between ask and bid is the spread. It's usually the largest cost in a gold IRA, bigger than years of account fees. Augusta's own fee guide calls the spread "usually the one that moves more dollars."

Calculating Your Break-Even

Break-even rise = (purchase price − buyback bid) ÷ buyback bid. If you pay $110 for metal the dealer would buy back for $100 the same day, the metal must rise 10% before you break even, before fees. At a 100% markup, it would need to double.

In the Red Rock Secured case, the CFTC alleged markups of about 100% to 130%. See regulator actions.

What "Buyback Guarantees" Mean

Many companies promise to buy back metals. That's a promise to make an offer, not to pay a set price. Some, like Preserve Gold, advertise no buyback fee; Augusta charges no separate dealer fee (its custodian charges $30 to process a sale). The bid still depends on the market and the product.

Questions to Ask

  1. What's the price per ounce over spot?
  2. What's your same-day buyback bid on this product?
  3. Is this bullion or a premium coin?
  4. Are there fees to sell back?
  5. Can you put this in writing?

These follow the CFTC's 10 things to ask. Bullion usually has a smaller spread than premium coins; see bullion vs numismatic coins.

Our Picks

Our top pick, Augusta Precious Metals, says it reviews same-day buyback bids with customers before purchase. Our budget pick, Noble Gold, advertises a straightforward buyback program.
