The Four Kinds of Gold IRA Cost

A gold IRA has more moving parts than a regular IRA. Three separate parties are involved: the dealer sells you the metals, the custodian administers the IRA, and the depository stores and insures the metals. Each has its own costs:

Gold IRA Costs at a Glance
CostWho Charges ItHow Often
Account setupCustodianOnce
Custody or maintenanceCustodianYearly
Storage and insuranceDepositoryYearly
Spread (markup over buyback price)DealerOn every purchase
Wire, distribution, closure and sale processingCustodianWhen they happen

Real Fee Schedules

Here's how two companies' published standard schedules compare:

Published Gold IRA Fees
FeeAugusta Precious MetalsNoble Gold
Setup$50$50
Yearly custody / maintenance$125$125
Yearly storage$110$160
Year 1 total$285$335
Later years$235$285
Closing the account$250 (funded accounts)$250
Minimum investment$50,000$20,000

Both use flat fees. Some providers charge storage or custody as a percentage of your account value, which costs more as your account grows. Ask which kind you're getting.

The Spread: Usually the Biggest Cost

The spread is the difference between what you pay for a coin or bar and what the dealer would pay you for it the same day. It's where dealers earn their margin, and it can easily exceed years of account fees, especially on "premium," proof or rare coins. Augusta's own fee guide calls the spread "usually the one that moves more dollars."

Always ask for the same-day buyback bid on each product before you buy. A coin bought at a high premium has to rise a long way in price before you break even.

Warning Signs of Excessive Fees

  • "Free silver" or bonus offers that are paid for through higher prices on what you buy. Augusta publishes a free "Free Silver" scam report on this.
  • Pressure to buy rare or collectible coins instead of bullion.
  • Fees quoted only verbally, not in writing.
  • Percentage-based fees that grow with your balance.

The CFTC cites a case where a gold dealer and IRA custodian charged nearly $150,000 in commissions and fees on a $300,000 rollover. Its customer advisory recommends asking about all fees up front and getting them in writing.

How to Keep Gold IRA Fees Low

  1. Choose a company with flat, published fees.
  2. Ask for the spread on each product and compare.
  3. Buy widely traded bullion coins and bars.
  4. Use a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer to fund the account.
  5. Hold for the long term rather than trading often.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does a Gold IRA Cost per Year?

What Is the Spread in a Gold IRA?

The difference between the purchase price and the dealer's buyback bid for the same product.

Are Flat Fees Better Than Percentage Fees?

For larger accounts, usually yes, because flat fees don't grow with your balance.
