What Is a Roth Gold IRA?
A Roth gold IRA is a self-directed Roth IRA that holds physical gold or silver. It follows the same tax rules as any Roth IRA: you fund it with after-tax money, and qualified withdrawals, including any growth, are tax-free. The difference is what's inside: IRA-eligible bullion stored at an approved depository instead of stocks or funds.
Roth vs Traditional Gold IRA
| Roth Gold IRA | Traditional Gold IRA | |
|---|---|---|
| Money going in | After tax | Usually pre-tax |
| Growth | Tax-free if withdrawals are qualified | Tax-deferred |
| Withdrawals | Qualified withdrawals tax-free | Taxed as income |
| Required minimum distributions | None for the original owner | Generally from age 73 |
| Funded from | Roth IRA, Roth 401(k), contributions or conversions | Traditional IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), TSP |
The IRS's Roth IRA guidance covers eligibility, contribution limits and what makes a withdrawal qualified.
Ways to Fund a Roth Gold IRA
- Transfer an existing Roth IRA directly to a self-directed Roth custodian. Not taxable.
- Roll over a Roth 401(k) after leaving your employer.
- Make annual contributions, within IRS income and contribution limits.
- Convert traditional IRA or 401(k) money to Roth. This is taxable in the year you convert.
Why Some Savers Choose a Roth for Gold
If gold's price rises over many years, gains in a Roth can be withdrawn tax-free in retirement, and there are no required distributions for the original owner, so metals can stay in the account longer. The trade-off: you pay tax up front, and gold's price can also fall.
Costs
A Roth gold IRA has the same costs as any gold IRA: setup, yearly custody and storage, and the spread on metals. With Augusta's standard schedule, that's $285 in year one and $235 a year after; with Noble Gold, $335 then $285. See gold IRA fees.
Noble Gold has a dedicated Roth IRA gold guide for smaller accounts, with a $20,000 minimum.
