Augusta Precious Metals in One Minute

Augusta Precious Metals is a gold and silver dealer founded in 2012 by Isaac Nuriani, its CEO. It helps retirement savers move money from an existing IRA, 401(k) or similar account into a self-directed gold or silver IRA, and also sells metals for direct delivery. Its pitch is education first: a free information kit, then a one-on-one web conference with its education team, before you buy anything.

It isn't for everyone. Augusta's standard minimum purchase is $50,000, whether through an IRA or with personal funds. Below that, look at our budget pick, Noble Gold, which starts at $20,000. This review covers how Augusta works, what it really costs each year and who it suits, using Augusta's own published terms.

How a Gold IRA With Augusta Works

  1. Request the free kit and book a call with Augusta's education team.
  2. Open a self-directed IRA with an independent custodian (Equity Trust).
  3. Transfer or roll over money from your current IRA, 401(k) or other eligible plan.
  4. Choose IRA-eligible gold or silver; Augusta reviews prices and same-day buyback bids with you.
  5. Confirm the order on a recorded call, which locks your price.
  6. The metals are shipped, insured, to an approved depository where they're stored for your IRA.

Augusta says its team handles about 95% of the paperwork and follow-up with the institutions involved. Funding the account doesn't oblige you to buy, and transfer timing depends partly on the company releasing your money.

What Augusta Costs

There are two kinds of cost in any gold IRA: account fees charged by the custodian and depository, and the spread, the difference between what you pay for metals and what a dealer would pay you for them the same day. Augusta publishes its standard account fee schedule:

Augusta Gold IRA Standard Account Fees
FeeCharged ByAmount
Account setup (year one)Equity Trust (custodian)$50
Annual custodyEquity Trust$125 a year
Annual storage and insuranceIndependent depository$110 a year
Total, first year$285
Total, later years$235
Buyback processingEquity Trust$30
In-kind distribution or transfer outEquity Trust$50
Account termination (funded accounts)Equity Trust$250

Augusta says it doesn't charge these fees itself and doesn't add a separate sales commission to its quoted prices. Its margin is in the price of the metals, which is why it walks customers through each product's purchase price and same-day buyback bid before they confirm. That spread usually costs more than the account fees, so ask for it on every product. Our Augusta fees and minimum guide goes deeper.

The Education-First Approach

Augusta's main differentiator is its education process. Its Director of Education, Devlyn Steele, designed the one-on-one web conference, which covers how gold IRAs work, costs, risks and how the gold market behaves. Augusta's own FAQ is unusually direct about risk: it says metals prices can fall, that storage and custody add costs, and that its goal is "an informed decision, not a promise that metals eliminate risk."

For a large, long-term decision, that's a good sign. Use the call to ask about spreads, buyback bids and exactly which products you'd be buying.

Buyback, Price Protection and Cancellations

  • Buyback: Augusta repurchases metals from existing customers based on the current bid and demand. It charges no separate dealer liquidation fee, though the custodian charges $30 to process a buyback. You're never required to sell back to Augusta.
  • Price lock: your purchase price locks when the recorded order-confirmation call is completed.
  • 7-Day Price Protection: a separate program for eligible purchases, under its own terms.
  • Cancellations: some purchases may qualify for seven-day money-back protection, and state law can add rights. Augusta says it explains the rules for your specific order before you confirm, so ask for them in writing.

Storage, Shipping and Security

IRA metals are stored at an approved professional depository with insurance against covered losses; insurance doesn't protect against falling prices. Augusta arranges insured shipping, with free shipping on qualifying purchases. You can't store IRA metals at home: the IRS treats taking possession as a distribution, which can mean tax and penalties. See our guide to IRS rules for gold IRAs.

Ratings and Reputation

Augusta's website lists an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, more than 4,000 five-star customer ratings across review sites, and recognition from Money ("Best Overall Gold IRA Company") and Investopedia ("Most Transparent Gold IRA Company") for 2022–2026. These are Augusta's own claims, so check the BBB and review sites yourself. Augusta also discloses that it may offer a small thank-you gift to customers who leave a review, which is worth knowing when reading ratings.

Where Augusta Falls Short

  • High minimum: $50,000 rules out many savers.
  • Gold and silver only in its standard IRA offering; no platinum or palladium focus.
  • Spreads aren't published as a single number; you see them per product on the call.
  • Sales process: it's a phone-based process, so expect follow-up calls after requesting the kit.

Who Augusta Is Best For

Augusta suits savers moving $50,000 or more from an IRA or 401(k) who want to understand exactly what they're buying before they commit, and who prefer a guided, paperwork-light process. If you're investing less than $50,000, or you want platinum and palladium, compare our budget pick, Noble Gold, instead.
