401(k) to Gold IRA Rollover (2026): How to Do It Without Triggering Taxes
When you can move a 401(k) into gold, and how to do it safely.

Can You Put a 401(k) Into Gold?
Most 401(k) plans don't let you hold physical gold directly. To own gold or silver bullion in a tax-advantaged account, you roll your 401(k) into a self-directed IRA that holds IRA-eligible metals. Done as a direct rollover, it isn't taxed.
When Can You Roll Over a 401(k)?
| Situation | Can You Roll Over? |
|---|---|
| You've left the employer (old 401(k)) | Yes, usually any time |
| You've retired | Yes |
| Still working, age 59½ or older | Often, if your plan allows in-service rollovers |
| Still working, under 59½ | Usually not, unless your plan allows it |
Rules vary by plan, so check your plan's summary or call the administrator and ask whether in-service rollovers are allowed.
Direct Rollover vs Getting a Check
Ask for a direct rollover to your new IRA custodian. If the plan pays the money to you instead, it must withhold 20% for taxes, even if you intend to roll it over. You'd then need to deposit the full amount, including the 20% from your own pocket, within 60 days to avoid tax on the withheld portion. A check made payable to the new custodian, not to you, avoids withholding. These rules are set out in the IRS's rollover guidance.
Step by Step
- Confirm with your plan that you're eligible to roll over.
- Choose a gold IRA company and open a self-directed IRA with its custodian.
- Request a direct rollover from your 401(k) to the new custodian.
- Send any forms your plan requires; the gold IRA company can help.
- Once funds arrive, choose IRA-eligible gold or silver.
- Metals are shipped to an approved depository for your IRA.
Traditional vs Roth 401(k)
A traditional 401(k) rolls into a traditional (pre-tax) gold IRA. A Roth 401(k) rolls into a Roth gold IRA. Moving pre-tax money into a Roth is a conversion and is taxable. See our Roth gold IRA guide.
Things to Weigh First
- Fees: a gold IRA has yearly custody and storage fees, often higher than a 401(k)'s. See gold IRA fees.
- No income: gold doesn't pay dividends or interest.
- Volatility: metals prices can fall.
- Partial rollovers: you don't have to move everything.
