What You'll Set Up

This tutorial takes you from a new ClickMagick account to tracking clicks and sales from your first traffic source. You'll need an offer or landing page to send people to, such as an affiliate offer, an opt-in page or a sales page, and a way to send traffic, such as an email, an ad or a solo ad. ClickMagick's setup wizard guides you through the basics, and its knowledge base has detailed articles for every setting.

Key ClickMagick Terms
TermWhat It Means
Tracking link (Smart Link)A link you share instead of your raw URL, so ClickMagick can count and filter each click
RotatorOne link that sends visitors to several destinations, for splitting or sharing traffic
Tracking domainYour own domain or subdomain used in tracking links, which looks more trustworthy and is less likely to be blocked
ConversionAn action you count as a result, such as an opt-in or a sale
Unique clickA click from a new visitor, after repeats and filtered bots are removed

Step 1: Create Your Account

Sign up for the 14-day free trial on the plan you expect to use; Starter is enough for most affiliates and solo ad buyers. The setup wizard runs when you first log in and asks about your business and traffic, which shapes what ClickMagick shows you first.

Step 2: Set Up Your Tracking Domain

Use a subdomain of a site you own, such as track.yoursite.com, as your tracking domain. Branded tracking links look more professional to readers and email providers than a generic shared domain, and ClickMagick's first-party tracking is designed to be harder for ad blockers to break. ClickMagick provides the DNS record to add at your domain registrar.

  1. Create a new tracking link in ClickMagick.
  2. Paste the destination URL: your affiliate link, landing page or offer.
  3. Give the link a clear name, such as the offer plus the traffic source.
  4. Choose your tracking domain and a short, readable link ending.
  5. Save it, then use this tracking link everywhere you'd have used the raw URL.

Create a separate tracking link for each traffic source, such as one per solo ad vendor or one per email, so you can compare them. Our guide on how to track affiliate links covers naming and organization.

Add Sub-IDs for Finer Tracking

You can add up to five Sub-IDs to the end of any Smart Link, separated by slashes, such as yourlink/youtube/description. Your stats then break down by each Sub-ID. Use separate links for different traffic sources, and Sub-IDs for details within a source, such as which button or email was clicked.

Send Mobile Visitors Somewhere Else (Optional)

A link can send mobile visitors to a different URL, such as a mobile-friendly version of your page or another tracking link, so you can track desktop and mobile traffic separately.

Step 4: Track Conversions

Clicks only tell half the story. To see which sources produce results, tell ClickMagick when a visitor converts.

  • On pages you control: add ClickMagick's tracking code to your opt-in thank-you page or sales confirmation page, so each lead or sale is recorded and credited to the right link.
  • For affiliate offers: where the network supports it, pass sales back to ClickMagick through a postback or integration, so you see which link produced each commission.
  • For checkouts and stores: connect supported platforms or use Zapier, webhooks or the API.

Example: Tracking ClickBank Sales

ClickBank calls its postback the "Instant Notification URL." To track ClickBank commissions in ClickMagick, you add ClickMagick's postback URL as your Instant Notification URL in ClickBank and create the secret key ClickBank requires. After that, each sale appears in ClickMagick against the link that produced it.

Step 5: Connect Your Ad Accounts (Optional)

If you run paid ads, connect your ad accounts so ClickMagick pulls in your spend automatically. Then it can show cost per lead, cost per sale and return on ad spend for each campaign, and send conversion data back to the ad platforms to help them optimize.

Optional: Set Up a Rotator

A rotator is one link that spreads clicks across several destinations, for example to promote several offers or share traffic with partners.

  1. Open the Rotators page and create a new rotator.
  2. Give it a name and a link slug of 4 to 20 letters, numbers or hyphens.
  3. Choose one of the four rotator modes for how clicks are distributed.
  4. Enter a backup URL for clicks that can't go anywhere else.
  5. Add your destination URLs, and set any limits, such as click caps, in each URL's settings.

Rotators aren't designed for split testing pages. For that, use the split-testing function in ClickMagick's TrueTracking platform.

Optional: Add a Retargeting Pixel

You can attach retargeting pixels from your ad platforms to a tracking link. Everyone who clicks is added to your retargeting audience, even if the link goes to a page you don't own, such as an affiliate offer.

Step 6: Send Traffic and Read Your Stats

Share your tracking link and let traffic run. In your stats, focus on:

What to Check in Your ClickMagick Stats
MetricWhy It Matters
Unique clicksReal visitors, after repeats are removed
Filtered clicksBots and suspicious clicks you shouldn't be paying for
Conversion rateThe share of visitors who opted in or bought
Cost per conversionWhat each lead or sale costs from that source
Revenue and ROASWhether the source makes more than it costs

The daily insights email summarizes what to scale, fix or pause, which saves checking the dashboard every day.

Step 7: Use What You Learn

  1. Spend more on sources with the best cost per sale.
  2. Cut or renegotiate sources with high filtered clicks or no conversions.
  3. Test one change at a time, such as a new headline, and compare results.
  4. Repeat every week as your data grows.

ClickMagick doesn't allow its shared tracking domains to be posted openly on social media, to protect them from being blocked. If you want to share tracking links in social posts or groups, other than in paid ads or private messages, set up a custom tracking domain first. And never use tracking links for spam; ClickMagick treats social spam the same as email spam.

Common Beginner Mistakes

  • Using one link for every source. You can't compare sources that share a link.
  • Skipping conversion tracking. Clicks without conversions can't show what makes money.
  • Judging too early. Wait for enough clicks before cutting a source.
  • Ignoring filtered clicks. A source with many bot clicks costs more than it looks.
