How the Zacks Rank Works
Zacks Investment Research was founded in 1978 by Len Zacks, whose research linked changes in analysts' earnings estimates to future stock moves. The Zacks Rank sorts stocks from #1 (Strong Buy) to #5 (Strong Sell) mainly on estimate revisions. It's designed for a holding period of a few months, so ranks change often.
What Zacks Premium Includes
Premium adds the full Zacks Rank lists, style scores (Value, Growth, Momentum), Earnings ESP, industry ranks and more than 45 predefined screens. It's a ratings and screening toolkit rather than a newsletter with a few picks.
About the Backtest Claims
Zacks says its #1 Rank stocks averaged about 24% a year since 1988, more than double the S&P 500. That figure comes from its own hypothetical calculation of monthly lists, not from real accounts, and ignores trading costs and taxes. The SEC's newsletter alert explains why performance claims need caution.
Using the Rank Sensibly
Because ranks update frequently, following them strictly can mean lots of trading and taxes. Many investors use the Rank as one input, for example avoiding #4 and #5 stocks or researching #1 and #2 ideas further, rather than buying every top-ranked stock.

A Steadier Way to Protect Savings
Ratings help pick stocks, but they don't diversify a portfolio. Our top pick, Augusta Precious Metals, offers a free guide to the sales tactics retirement savers should watch for; our budget pick Noble Gold offers a free economic-crisis guide. Precious metals carry their own risks and costs.
Is Zacks Legit?
Yes. Zacks is a long-established research firm with a well-known rating system and a free trial. Treat its backtests as marketing and its ranks as one input.
