American Income Life in One Minute

American Income Life (AIL) is a life insurance company owned by Globe Life Inc., a publicly traded insurer. It sells life and supplemental health insurance to working families, including through labor union and affinity relationships, using an exclusive agency of independent contractors.

Globe Life's 2025 annual report (10-K) lists about 11,920 average producing agents across the U.S., Canada and New Zealand, and describes them as independent contractors who sell exclusively for Globe Life.

How the Agent Opportunity Works

New agents get licensed, then sell policies to leads provided through AIL's union and association relationships and referrals. Pay is commission-based. Agency leaders also earn on the production of agents they recruit and manage, which is why AIL job ads are common and recruiting is a big part of the culture.

  1. Apply and interview with a local agency.
  2. Get your state life and health license.
  3. Complete training and start working leads.
  4. Earn commissions on policies sold.
  5. Move toward management by recruiting and leading agents.

The 2024 EEOC Determination

Globe Life's 10-K says that in September 2024 the EEOC notified the company it had determined that all sales agents affiliated with State General Agent Simon Arias were employees, not independent contractors. Globe Life says the determination isn't binding and that it believes agents are properly classified, while acknowledging the risk that a court, the IRS or another authority could find otherwise.

Is It an MLM?

AIL sells real, regulated insurance and is owned by a large public company. But its agency structure, where managers earn from the agents they recruit, shares features with multi-level marketing. The FTC's guidance on MLMs and pyramid schemes explains what to look for.

Questions to Ask Before Joining

  • Is there a base salary, or is it commission only?
  • What do first-year agents typically earn after expenses?
  • Do I pay for leads, licensing or training?
  • How much of my manager's pay depends on recruiting me?
