Can You Move a 457(b) Into Gold?

A 457(b) is a deferred compensation plan offered mainly by state and local governments, and some tax-exempt organizations. 457(b) plans don't usually let you hold physical gold, but a governmental 457(b) can generally be rolled into a traditional IRA, including a self-directed gold IRA, once you're eligible for a distribution.

See the IRS overview of 457(b) deferred compensation plans.

The Catch: Early Withdrawal Rules Change

Withdrawals from a governmental 457(b) after you leave your job generally aren't subject to the 10% early-withdrawal tax that applies to IRAs before age 59½. Once you roll that money into an IRA, IRA rules apply, including the 10% additional tax on most early withdrawals. If you might need the money before 59½, consider rolling over only part of it.

Step by Step

  1. Confirm with your plan administrator that you're eligible to roll over.
  2. Open a self-directed IRA through a gold IRA company.
  3. Request a direct rollover from your 457(b) to the new custodian.
  4. Once funds arrive, choose IRA-eligible gold or silver.
  5. Metals are stored at an approved depository.

A direct rollover avoids the 20% withholding that applies when a plan pays you directly. See our gold IRA rollover guide.
